The Three Act Play – 1

The God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. Genesis 2:3

Act One – God blessed the seventhday.

Did you know that when God blesses something or someone, His posture assumes a very certain stance? You remember the famous benediction: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Num. 6:24-26, NIV): When  God blesses you, what is His posture? “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us” (Ps. 67:1, NIV): Clearly when God blesses something or someone, He turns His face toward it to give it His full attention.

You and I are the same way, aren´t we? Remember your first car? Mine was a brand-new 11-year-old 1961 Volkswagen Beetle with flaky green paintjob, over-sized tires, and a rusted, holey muffler. But I couldn´t take my eyes off of it. Why? Because when something is of great value to you, you love to look at it. Husbands and wives know all about that: even after all those anniversaries, or especially because of all those anniversaries, you look across a crowded room and spot her, an epiphany of beauty that holds your gaze. Why? Because when someone is of great value to you, you love to look at her.

And “God blessed the seventh day.” In those familiar words rich with meaning, He does something to that day that He does not do to any other day of the week. He turns His face toward the seventh day and with that divine benediction gives to the seventh day His full attention. It is the only day of the week that the Creator gazes upon with such rapt attention. For it is His gift to the chosen, and on it He and they will celebrate their friendship and love as on no other day of the week.

Which is why, for the life of me, I cannot imagine how anybody could come along and announce that this unique face-turning, gaze-holding blessing of God has been removed from the seventh day and transferred to another day. Especially since there is not a solitary hint of such a removal or transfer in all of Holy Scripture.

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Ps. 118:24).
Happy sabbath 😃😃
